Scarborough
Scarborough is your archetypal seaside resort town, it blossomed in popularity during the Victorian era and has never looked back. There are plenty of attractions to keep visitors amused or occupied during their visit, not only the wide expanse of beach that marks the location as a fabulous family destination. The most noticeable feature of the resort has to be the castle which dominates the skyline and actually backs onto the welcoming sands. Getting Out and About
Scarborough is in the midst of a stunning part of the country. You don’t have to travel too far to get to the wonderfully relaxing Robin Hood’s Bay or the atmospherically gothic Whitby. You are not really that far away from the historic city of York either. When you get into Scarborough you can’t fail to notice the massive Grand Hotel – when it was built in 1867 it was one of the largest hotels in the whole of Europe. Take all of the seaside associated businesses and attractions out of the place and you will still find it a wonderful place to be. There are dramatic and beautiful cliffs, beautifully clean beaches and the incredible warm welcome that you only get in Yorkshire. If you are looking for the perfect base from which you can explore the rest of the count, Scarborough is the perfect choice.
Things to See and Do
Scarborough has a wealth of natural attraction from beautiful gardens to miles of stunning coastline to explore, add the North Yorkshire Moors National Park into the equation and you will probably never have been in anywhere quite so naturally stunning. The historic castle is perfect for exploring and fuelling the kids’ imaginations with tales of knight bold and damsels in distress, and the modern shops, entertainment venues and eating establishments will accommodate everyone’s more immediate needs. The harbour is a hive of activity with colourful fishing boats bringing in their catch every day and there are a number of pleasure craft that will take you out to sea for a wonderful scenic cruise.
Despite blossoming in popularity during the Victorian era Scarborough has actually been in existence since Viking times when the settlement was originally founded by a Viking raider in 966AD, the Romans also made a settlement here on what we now call the castle headland. Evidence has also been found that people settled here in both the Stone Age and the Bronze Age, showing that the region has been attracting people for millennia. Scarborough is more than just a beach, it is a wonderful place for families to enjoy time together, whatever their ages.
